Coffee Traditions Around the World - Part 1

From its birthplace in Ethiopia to the streets of New York City, coffee has become a part of people's lives and the center stage in countless gatherings and ceremonies. No matter where you drink your coffee, it’s a sip of caffeine that gets you going.

Despite being the second most popular and consumed beverage in the world, coffee has its own traditions and customs that vary among different regions and populations.

Coffee Traditions

Some cultures brew coffee using machines called coffeemakers, while others use pots called percolators. Some people drink their coffee in the morning, while others enjoy their coffee in the afternoon.

The ways people brew, blend and drink their coffee is a reflection of not only their personal style and taste but also their culture, region and background.

If you want to learn more about the coffee traditions around the world from the mouths of the locals then you are in the right place. As you make yourself your cup of joy to fuel up for the day, come join me as we discover and learn more about the coffee traditions in coffee-loving countries.

1- Coffee Traditions, Armenia by @lusine_photos

Coffee Traditions - Armenia

I will start my Coffee Traditions Series from Armenia where I was born and lived for 23 years. A typical day here seems to go around coffee.

- Coffee is best enjoyed with family members, neighbors, friends and any guests (invited or uninvited).

-The first thing you offer your guests is Coffee. They are usually not asked if they drink coffee or no, only whether they prefer coffee with foam/sugar :)

- Coffee is usually made by boiling in coffee pots and served in Espresso-size cups with a saucer. The saucer is here in case you want to turn your cup upside down trying to find images or figures that can predict your future:)
(Once I was young and used to believe that:)

- Coffee is always served with something sweet, actually with MANY sweet things. Everything is put on the Coffee Table like a buffet: candies, chocolate bars, ice cream, cake, dried and seasonal fruits, anything that you can find at home. Your guests should feel like the king and they HAVE TO taste everything!

"I'm trying to cut down my sugar".
"Come on, only 1. It  will do you no harm".

This is the Armenian Coffee Hospitality :)

2- Coffee Traditions, Lebanon by @lusine_photos

Coffee Traditions - Lebanon

- Let me tell you about the coffee culture in Lebanon where I've been living since 2007.

- Keep in mind the specific design on this coffee cup as it is typically Lebanese, though no one is quite sure how and why it originated.

- Coffee cups without saucers are usually used at traditional Lebanese restaurants or among neighbors over their early morning coffee. Don't even dream to see any sweets with the Lebanese morning coffee. It should be as dark and bitter as possible.

- If you want to visit someone you may usually call them saying that you will pass by for a cup of coffee but be patient as you will usually be served lots of sweets, usually "homemade", and chocolate first. After you have spent plenty of time interacting and you show signs of leaving, you will be served the "Farewell" Coffee

- The younger generation prefer instant coffee with milk: "Nescafe" as they call it, while black coffee, which is made in coffee pots, is usually drunk by the older generation (like me:)

- Cardamom Coffee is also very popular but don't expect to like it from the first try. I could not swallow the first time I tried it though it is my favorite now

People change, tastes too😊

3- Coffee Traditions, Italy by @ane-grig

Coffee Traditions - Italy

- Italians start and end their days with a coffee, usually a cappuccino with a croissant in the morning, a caffè macchiato as an afternoon pick-me-up, and espresso after dinner.

- When Italians say coffee, they mean “espresso”. So when you are in a café, just say “un caffè per favore” and you will be served an espresso. Besides that, avoid ordering a Cappuccino in the afternoons and evenings like a typical Italian would do. Some say it's because the milk and foam serve as a meal substitute and the dairy in the cappuccino may upset the stomach.

The Italians have become famous for their espresso drinks, but the country is also home to dozens of other espresso styles.

Now it's time to learn how to order coffee in a typical Italian way using the Italian words.

caffè ristretto – a very strong espresso
caffè lungo – espresso with much more water (“lungo” means long)
caffè doppiò – double espresso
caffè shakerato – espresso with ice and sugar
caffè latte – espresso with milk
caffè latte senza schiuma – espresso with milk without foam
cappuccino – espresso with frothed milk usually taken in the mornings with your breakfast, usually a croissant
caffè macchiato - espresso with a drop of foamed milk
caffè macinato - ground coffee
caffè marocchino – espresso with milk froth and cocoa powder
caffè mocacino – cappuccino with whipped cream and chocolate
caffè coretto – espresso with a strong liquor, usually grappa, or a whiskey
caffè americano – 1/3 espresso with 2/3 of water usually

Coffee Photo Battle - 1

If you have been following me on Instagram - @my_blog_coffee_and_camera and you check up my stories regularly you must know that I've been holding Coffee Photo Battles on Sundays already since May.

It all started when my followers would tag me in their beautiful coffee photos as they associate everything "coffee" related with my account (so flattered for that;). Even some of my sweet blogger friends call me a "Coffee Queen":)

So, instead of just resharing their stories and posts, it occurred to me that it would be fun to post those aesthetic coffee photos in my stories and hold a fun Coffee Photo Battle:)

Then I announced this idea in my stories and asked my followers to DM me their coffee photos. A few hours passed but no one contacted me. Did I give up? No, I was too excited about that idea. I contacted my close coffee lovers and asked them to participate and send me some coffee photos. I am so grateful that most of them did agree to participate and so this photo contest started and still has been going on thanks to them.

How Coffee Photo Battle Works

This is what happens during Sunday's Coffee Photo Battles. I group the coffee photos sent to me into 4 and post them on my stories asking my followers to click on their favorite photo out of each 4. After 24 hours I count the votes and announce the winner.

Not to make tea or hot chocolate lovers feel excluded I also accept other hot drink photos and we have a special "no-coffee photo battle" from time to time:)

As an appreciation and a small gift, I do lettering with the winner's name. The more people participate and share my #coffeephotobattle on their social media accounts, the more it will get popular and hopefully, in the future, I will have some sponsored gifts for my winners.

Coffee Recipes - Dalgona Coffee

I have a sweet tooth so in order to enjoy my coffee with some dessert, I do prefer it dark and sugarless.

Coffee shop menus are really tempting but what they offer is usually too sweet and creamy for me.

I'm not a frequent visitor to coffee shops so if I do go to a coffee shop I either order something new and beautiful for pretty shots or go for my favorite black Coffee or Espresso.

Dalgona Coffee

However, it's been a while a Korean whipped coffee drink called  Dalgona Coffee has been trending on social media and I was too curious not to try it.

It's super easy to make at home, tastes really delish, will be a perfect thing to offer your guests on hot summer days.
It can be served both hot and cold. I tried the cold version and I already know that I like it more.

Dalgona Coffee

Ingredients

Equal amounts of  instant coffee, sugar and boiling water
( I used 3 tablespoons for 2 glasses)
milk of your preference
Irish Cream or Baileys (optional)
Cognac (optional)

Dalgona Coffee

Directions

Whip the coffee, sugar and hot water with a mixer until the mixture becomes light brown, smooth and creamy.
You can whisk them in a narrow bowl but it will take you much longer time and more physical efforts.

Fill the glass with the milk of your preference (hot or cold).
I used my favorite unsweetened almond milk. You can even add ice.

Add approximately a tablespoon of Irish Cream or Baileys and half a tablespoon of Cognac.

Pour the frothy coffee mixture on top of the milk and voila, enjoy your Dalgona Coffee while stirring it with a straw or a spoon.

Optional Toppings

cocoa powder, coffee powder, cinnamon, crumbled biscuits, honey

Dalgona Coffee

I want to thank Nanik from Chef Monkey for sharing her recipe and inspiring me to give it a try. The liquor and the cognac really made it taste special.

Let me know when you try this recipe by tagging me @my_blog_coffee_and_camera or Nanik @nanikik on Instagram.

Insert some coffee as it's time to begin another Coffee Lover Interview, this time with Shawna from Practically Minimal.
Shawna is exploring minimalism in a practical way with the aim to inspire one another to work toward a life free from clutter and too many commitments.

1- What time of day do you usually drink coffee?

In the morning. Except, if I’m out at a nice restaurant, I may have an espresso or a Spanish coffee after dinner.

2- How many cups of coffee do you drink in a day?

One or two usually. On occasion, I’ll have three cups, but that’s rare.

3- Do you prefer going out for coffee or drinking it at home.

Both. I’m a freelance writer and blogger, so sometimes I’ll work from a coffee shop. More often, though, I’ll make my morning coffee at home or grab a coffee to go.

4- What is your favourite coffee drink?

Hot, black coffee either light roast or medium roast. If it’s a really hot day,  I might have a cold-brewed black coffee as a treat.

5- When drinking your coffee, do you prefer drinking it instantly and quickly or taking your time and enjoying it?

Taking my time and enjoying it. However, I sometimes do 6 a.m. fitness classes, so I’ll usually drink my coffee pretty quickly on my way there!

6- What is your primary reason for drinking coffee?

I’m probably addicted to it. I don’t necessarily notice that it “wakes me up,” but I’m sure it does. I look forward to my first cup of coffee in the mornings.

7- What do you take coffee with?

Absolutely nothing!

8- Do you own a coffee machine at home?

Yes, I have a Ninja. It’s a drip coffee maker, put you can make a single cup at a time to a full pot (and everything in between).

9- How often do you visit coffee shops?

Anytime I need to get out of the house and have work to do. Or, if I’m between appointments and need something to do. I may go several times a week, or not go at all for several weeks. I’m very inconsistent with my coffee shop visits!

10- What is your favourite coffee shop?

I don’t think I have a favourite. My first choice is almost always a cool, independently owned coffee shop. In Edmonton, I like Credo or Transcend. Otherwise, I’m a Starbucks girl. You can pretty much always find a Starbucks nearby and their coffee is consistently good!

Even though I’m Canadian, I really don’t like Tim Hortons coffee (am I allowed to say that, lol?)!
